Popovers for Piglet on Winnie the Pooh Day

Today is Winnie the Pooh Day the day to celebrate every one's favorite bear on the birthday of his creator A.A. Milne.

Of course Winnie is actually a real bear who belonged to Milne's son Christopher Robin and inspired his fathers stories.  However, what lots of people do not know is that the real Winnie the pooh along with Eeyore, Piglet, and Tiger are in the custody of the New York Public Library and reside in a glass case at Stephen A. Schwarzman building   on 5th Ave and 42nd St.  This is a bit of a shock to those of us who have read the classic Pooh stories and know how resoundly  British Pooh is, and to make matters worse the library claims Pooh and his friends are as happy now as they were in the 100 acre wood, as if!   Thankfully there is a petition you can sign to return Pooh and his friends to their homeland.

In honor of Winnie the Pooh Day we decided to make Popovers for Piglet a recipe from the classic Pooh cookbook which was published in 1969.   It was a big hit with the hippies who must have appreciated Poohs laid back philosophy of "doing nothing."
Popovers for Piglet

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Grease 2 muffins or popover tins generously with butter.
  3. Sift the flour and salt into a mixing bowl.
  4. Combine milk, butter and honey and add to the flour.
  5. Stir to combine.
  6. Add the eggs and beat until smooth in an electrix mixer
  7. Fill the muffin tins half full.
  8. Bake approximately 25 minutes* but **DO NOT** open the oven door or the popovers will collapse (you want to save the collapsing for later!).
  9. Remove from oven. The popovers will collapse in the center in about 1 minute, usually less time (which is what happened to mine before I could photograph them).
  10. Remove from the muffin pans.
  11. Serve drizzle with honey or with honey butter (made by beating butter and honey together)

  1. Winnie was actually a Canadian. During WW1 he was bought for $20.00 by Canadian Lt. Harry Colebourn of the 2nd Canadian Infantry Brigade and became the Brigade Mascot on their way to Britain where he was later given to the London Zoo where Christopher Robin used to visit him daily. :) Small world isn't it! We love popovers too! Thanks for posting!

  2. It is sad that he is stuck in a glass case in NY.

  3. Winnie the Pooh was first brought to my attention after my first baby. I never read any of the books when I was a child. Yet with my children he became this dear friend and I identified with Eeyore. I still have my girl's little friends and the books..quite a nostalgic trip this morning.....

  6. We are horrified that Winnie the Pooh is not in the UK. Did you know that my Human Grandad (HGD) was brought up in Hartfield, Sussex, right by Ashdown Forest, site of the "Hundred Acre Wood' and that HGD's father ran the village butchers shop and had AA Milne for a customer and that HGD's brother was in the Home Guard with Christopher Robin at the start of WW2! There is now a 'Winnie the Pooh' shop (but sadly no butcher) in Hartfield. You can go on a walk nearby to visit the famous bridge and play Poohsticks.
    Toodle pip!

  7. Mom has a Pooh Bear that was given to her by a long gone son, much like a faded memory now. We are not allowed to touch the Pooh Bear.

The popover recipe looks delicious. Thank you!

We love the blue fleece pajamas/jacket that everyone is wearing at the top of the blog. What a precious photo!

  9. Some great stories about Winnie the Pooh there.

My Lady Of The House loved the Winnie the Pooh books and especially A A Milne's poetry.

Also, her story is that when she was a little girl in the 1970s she saw the original 'Christopher Robin' who was then running a book shop in Dartmouth.

Love and licks, Winnie (the greyhound)
