Lord Stirling Stable Dog Walk-(And a Recipe for Quiche)

This blog may be called Urban Hounds, but the truth is I would love to live in the country.  My life just hasn't worked out that way.   So as much as I believe the city has a lot to offer dogs, its nice to get into the country side sometimes.  When I read about the weekly Lord Stirling Stable Dog Walk  in the book Best Hikes with Dog, New Jersey )which is a great resource by the way) I had to give it a try.

The Lord Stirling stable is about a 40 minute drive from our home and it is in a fairly rural area.  Every week they host a dog walk around the stable grounds for the price of three dollars a dog.  In the fall and winter months the walks start at 10:30, in Summer they are in the cooler evening hours.

Today was our first time doing the walk. We brought Tubby and Norbert along since two dogs seemed like a manageable number for our first time.  There where quite a few dogs of varying sizes and breeds, and their owners, in attendance and most people seemed like regular attendees, which is something I would doubtless be if I  lived closer.    The walkers divided into two groups a faster group and a slower one, since we were new we went with the slower group.  The walk went around the riding trails and past some streams and into the woods.  The other owners where very friendly and the dogs where adorable, particularly a 6 month old Bernese Mountain Dog pup that Norbert and Tubby had a good time playing with.  The walk was nice but not too challenging and Tubby and Norbert had no trouble keeping up.   Tubby has always been an athletic pug and several other walkers commented on what good shape he was in.  I admit I felt a swell of maternal pride.  Thought its a bit far for  every day I will definitely be back.  Here are some pictures from our walk:
The start of the walk where all the dogs met up.

A lot of the dogs barked at the horses, but Tubby and Norbert ignored them.  The horses seemed unfazed by the canine guests..

Once nice feature of walking on the trails, you don't have to pick up after your dog since the horses use the trails too and stable staff clean up the horse droppings.

The walk was nice and shady so the dogs did not get too  hot.

Tubby and Norbert took a nice nap after we got home from the walk and I made a quiche for brunch. The recipe is fattening (of course) but unbelievable delicious.

Mushroom, Ham, and Cheddar Quiche

Ingredients:
  • 1 frozen pie crust (or home made pastry shell)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 package Baby Bello or Button mushrooms, sliced
  • 1 shallot, chopped
  • 1 to 2 cups cheddar cheese (I used the larger amount because I had left over cheese)
  • 1/4 lb of thick sliced Baked Virginia ham, I used Apple Gate Farms brand, chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups half and half or whole milk
  • 4 large eggs
  • a pinch of nutmeg
  • a pinch of Cayenne pepper
  • salt and pepper
  • chives, chopped
Preheat the oven to 400 and pre-bake the pie shell for about 10 minutes

Melt the butter in a medium sized pan or skillet over medium low heat and saute the mushrooms and the shallot for about five minutes.  Season with salt and pepper.

Pour the mushroom mixture in the pie shell and top with half of the ham, then half the cheese, and then the remaining ham and cheese.  Place the pie pan in a baking pan with sides (this prevents a mess if the quiche filling runs over, which it usually does.)

Whisk the half and half, eggs, cayenne, nutmeg, and some salt and pepper together.   Pour the mixture into the pie crust.  Sprinkle the chopped chives on top.

Bake about 40 minutes until puffed and golden brown.

Note: You can easily leave out the ham if you want a vegetarian quiche

Today in Canine History-The Discovery of a Superstar

In 1918, somewhere around this time (the exact date is disputed), a litter of five homeless German Shepherd pups, and their scrawny mother, where discovered by US army Corporal Duncan Lee and his battalion in a bombed out dog kennel in Lorraine, France.  Lee took one of the pups and named him Rin Tin Tin  after a puppet popular with french children.  Less then two months later WWI came to an end and Duncan took Rin Tin Tin, or Rinty as he called him, back home to the Los Angeles, California.

Lee spent a great deal of time teaching the dog tricks and Rinty was apparently a natural at performing, impressing dog show attendees with his tricks.  Film making and cameras where the new thing and Lee was convinced that his dog could become a star, and he was right!  In 1922 Rinty got his big break playing a wolf in The Man From Hell's River.  He followed that with a starring role in Where the North Begins  in which he plays a wolf-dog faced with the either staying with the wild wolves who raised him or becoming the companion of man.  The movie was so successful that is credited with saving Warner Bros. from bankruptcy.   Numerous other roles followed and Rin Tin Tin became the first real canine movie superstar.

Rin Tin Tin lived to the good, relatively, old age of 14 and as befits any film legend there are several rumors about his death.  The popular story is that he died in the arms of Jean Harlow, which is perhaps a little hard to believe.

Hollywood loves a sequel and Rin Tin Tin spawned a succession of accomplished dogs. Rin Tin Tin Jr appeared in several movies in the 1930s and Rin Tin Tin Jr. the third helped  Duncan Lee train dogs for the first US Military canine corps.  In the 1950s Rin Tin Tin the fourth starred in a series of successful films  such as, The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin.  Today Rin Tin Tin the 12th travels around the country attending events.   On September 7, 2011  he rang the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange when the American Humane Association honored the 300 canines who helped in the recovery efforts at ground zero in September of 2001.

For everyone who wants to learn more about a fascinating canine Susan Orlean's definitive biography of Rin Tin Tin, Rin Tin Tin-The Life and The Legend
will be out September 27. I can't wait.

Here is a clip of the original Rinty's last film

Tasty Tuesday-Sunflower Seed Cookies in Honor of the X Files

September 10, Saturday, marked an important anniversary in TV history the, the 18th anniversary of the premier of the (in our opinion) best show ever on TV, The X Files.  At least it was  the best show for about seven years, it went downhill after the year 2000 since its really a show about pre-millenial tension.  Anyway we can be big couch potatoes here

and nothing is more fun then cuddling up and enjoying an evening watching mom's favorite show (we have all the DVDs and the show is available for instant download from Netflix.)  In fact mom is such a fan that when she and Dad got married in 2001, they had Mulder and Scully on top of their wedding cake

As anyone who watches the X Files knows Agent Mulder loves sunflower seeds.  So mom thought it would be nice to make us some sunflower seed cookies.

Peanut butter, Honey, and Sunflower Seed Drop Cookies

Ingredients:
3/4 cup of whole wheat flour
2 heaping tbsp peanut butter
1 tbsp honey
1/2 cup sunflower seeds (unsalted)
1 egg, beaten
1/4 cup oil

Preheat oven to 350.  Microwave the peanut butter and honey together in a glass measuring cup until runny.  Stir together the flour, peanut butter honey mixture , sunflower seeds, egg, and oil until well mixed.  Drop onto a baking sheet by teaspoonfulls.  Bake 10-15 minutes.

Urban Hounds List of 10 Great X Files Episodes (by our mom) Actually pretty much every episode is great.

1) Pilot-Where it All Began
2) Squeeze-Cool Creepy Episode
3) Irresistible-Scary Serial Killer Episode
4) Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose Very Funny Episode and Scully Gets a Dog!
5) Jose Chungs From Outer Space-Another funny Episode and it Reminds me of one of my favorite books Little Green Men by Christopher Buckley
6) Home-A neat episode about a family of monstrous hillbillies
7) Elegy-Everything about this episode is just very well done, and its very sad too.
8) Folie A Deux-This episode is about a monster loose in a telemarketing firm.  I used to work as a telemarketer in college and it was indeed a monstrous job.
9) Three of a Kind: I really like the Lone Gunmen and this is their big episode
10) Je Souhaite-I liked how the genie stuff is don in this episode and I liked how Mulder's wish for world peace turned out.

It is Tasty Tuesday

So head over to Kol's Notes for some other great recipes.

Perfect Saturdays-A Delicious Breakfast and a Long Walk

So on Thursday we signed up for the wonderful Kolchak Puggles K9 Kamp
Photobucket
with so many dogs in America (and their owners)  obese we don't want to join their ranks. After all, we are older and we want to be around a long time and obesity can drastically reduce life span.  Hopefully what with our advancing years and our busy parents, we can keep up with the young whipper snappers during all the challenges (excluding four year old Bob as he is a young whipper snapper).

Still it is the weekend and mom likes to make a nice breakfast on Saturday morning (she swears that during the work week she has a healthy breakfast of yogurt and fruit in her classroom before the student's come in).  For herself and Dad mom made Baked Apple Pancake.  The first time mom tasted a Baked Apple Pancake at the Original House of Pancakes (NOT to be confused with the vastly inferior International House Of Pancakes)  in Buffalo, New York where she went to college she had a taste epiphany.  Luckily, there is an Original House of Pancakes in Fort Lee, NJ so she can still have one on occasion.  She says they are as large as a big dinner plate and when they arrive at your table you must say to the waiter, "oh my I didn't know it would be that big," before you precede to stuff yourself.

Fort Lee is a bit of a drive and besides the Apple Pancake served at the restaurant provides the monthly calorie requirement of an average adult.  So mom makes a vaguely healthier version at home (really only healthier because the portions are smaller).

Oven Baked Apple Pancake

Ingredients:
  • 2 tart apples, like Granny Smith, cored and sliced.
  • 1/4 c. granulated sugar
  • 2 tsps ground cinnamon
  • 3 eggs beaten
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup flour (all purpose can be used but bread flour is better)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
  • 7 tbsp of butter
  • Powdered sugar for serving
Preheat the oven to 425 degrees and make sure the rack is in the middle.

In a small bowl combine the sugar and the cinnamon and set aside.

In a bowl with a whisk or in a blender combine the eggs, salt, flour, milk, and vanilla extract.

In a large cast iron skillet melt the butter over medium heat, making sure it coats the entire pan.  Add the apples and the cinnamon sugar and stir and let cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the apples are beginning to cook and the sugar butter mixture is very brown and syrupy.

Pour the batter over the apples and bake in the oven for 20 minutes (do not open the door).

Serve the pancake by flipping it onto a plate, so the apples are facing up, or by cutting it into wedges.  Top with powdered sugar. Makes about three or four servings.

The above is not really a dog friendly treat  so us  hounds didn't get any (sigh).  Instead we got our usual carefully measured amount of kibble.

After the apple pancakes Mom and Dad needed to burn off some calories.  So along with Norbert and Bob they drove down to Pavonia Newport to walk along the water.  Its a bit of a long walk so Tubby, Ping, and Dr. Zira stayed home as it may have been to much for them.

The waterway at Pavonia Newport is mom's absolute favorite place to walk us in Jersey City.   Its a very expensive neighborhood with condos in the seven digit range.   The reason is the spectacular view of the NYC skyline as well as Yachts and people boating.  Today there was a speed boat race.  There are wide paths down by the water and plenty of people and dogs, and a nice breeze.  Mom says with all the hotels in the area walking there makes you feel like you are on vacation.  Here are some pictures of our walk:

Starting out on the Trek, we love the wide pathways

The view of Manhattan, mom's photography skills certainly do not do it justice, but you can see one of the Speed Boats!

Another view

From this view you can actually see the school mom has just started working at (she has taught for years but transferred sights.)  The school is the famous Stuyvesant High School and mom works in a very small capsule Special Education program that is run by NYC's District 75.

One of the fancy hotels in Pavonia Newport.  You can see the water is still brown from the Hurricane.

K9 Kamp-Time to Get Fit!

There is a pet obesity crises in America.

We hear a lot about the human obesity crises, and the numbers are disturbing, according to the Gallup Healthways Wellbeing Index, 63.1% of Americans are overweight or obese.   What is even more shocking to me is that according to the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention 32% of cats are overweight and 21.6% are obese.  The numbers for dogs are 35% overweight and 20.6% obese.  What is even worse is the number of obese pets is growing.   As pet guardians we decide what goes into our dogs food bowl, after all they don't feed themselves.  When we make the decision to overfeed and/or under exercise them we are potentially shortening their life span and contributing to the development of a host of painful health problems.  Not something you want to do to your best friend.

I know it can be tough to keep your pets at a healthy weight.    I own two pugs and a bulldog, two of the  breeds most prone to obesity.  Plus when you look at a sweet face like this:

It is pretty tough to say no more cookies! But its important.  I am always very careful to measure and weigh my dogs food.   Through trial and error I have found that they need a bit less then what is recommended on most food bags.  I make sure to weigh my dogs regularly and any time they gain, I cut back on the food and up the exercise.  I also adore making my dogs treats, but I am very careful to cut them into teeny, tiny pieces.

Of course a healthy diet is only one part of staying physically fit, exercise is the other.  Aside from helping with weight loss,  exercise has been shown too delay the onset of  Alzheimer's in people and these finding apply to dogs as well.  So keeping your older dog active is doubly important, with a house full of seniors I wont forget this!  I love walking my dogs, but like a lot of people I have a busy schedule.  Particularly now that the school year is starting.  My husband and I both work but we are going to make a concerted effort to be more active with our dogs, taking into account their individual needs (such as Dr. Zira's arthritis).

I have been writing about my dogs in this post, but I can definitely stand to improve my own physical fitness.  As anyone who looks at my blog's recipes knows I LOVE to eat, and cook, fattening food.   (I do try to make some healthy meals too).   So exercise is important.  Living in a big city I already walk a lot, ride my bicycle, and use my Elliptical machine, but exercising with my dogs more certainly can't hurt.   I encourage everyone to join K9 Kamp, its a wonderful idea!

  • Winners must describe what they dream or wish for most in the world.

It is very difficult to pick just 6 blogs to give the award too, all of the pet blogs I follow are great.  I somewhat randomly picked 6 terrific blogs.  Please check them out:

So now for my dream or wish.  My first thought is that I would wish dogs and cats would live as long as people do so that I could have my pets with me longer, but that is a little selfish.  I am not sure that would improve life for dogs and cats, after all they only about 10-15 years now, and sadly many of them can't find loving homes for that length of time.     So I tried to think of something else....

My wish would be that all pet owners would embrace the positive training methods espoused by the likes of Patricia McConnell  and Ian Dunbar (and plenty of other positive trainers.)  Even thought research has pretty much dispelled the dominance theory in regards to dogs, many people still cling to it. Others use punishment based methods that rely on pain and other aversive methods to shape behavior.  I know that wouldn't work for me, why should it work for our pets?   I think if people could gain a better understanding of their dogs (and cats) behavior we would have stronger human/animal bonds, happier pets, happier people, and less homeless animals.
