Wednesday Wellness Woes

Unfortunately in the last two weeks we have had a number of medical woes here.

First Tubby got another cornea scratch:

Thankfully we caught it early, with puggie eyes you need to be on the alert, and the only treatment necessary is antibiotic ointment.  Tubby seems to be feeling pretty good actually, and he isn't itching or rubbing his eye.

Then Bob got a cornea scratch, his first one, and out of nowhere his poor eye looked like this

same treatment as Tubby, though Bob's eye looks a bit worse.  Once we finish these eye treatments we are starting on a nightly program on Genteal eye drops to try and prevent any future issues.

The eye issues weren't the end though during Ernie's senior wellness exam we found out he had crystals in his urine and an X Ray confirmed small stones in his bladder.   Luckily no surgery is needed but he is on a new food.

Then during Ping's 6 month senior wellness bloodwork we found out her liver values have risen again.

Thankfully they are still on the low end of high so we are continuing the the Denamarin supplement she takes and switching her to a lower protein low fat food, wellness super five mix and some home cooked, though in general I am a fan of high protein foods they can be tough on the liver.  (The good news is Tubby's senior blood work is excellent).

I am so thankful that we caught Ping's and Ernie's problems early and can begin diet and supplement changes that can help manage their issues.   If we had not done routine blood work and urine testing we likely would not have found the problems until they were very advanced and difficult  to treat.   If you have young pets please invest in pet insurance and if you have older pets consider  getting wellness exams every 6 months, remember early detection is the key to successfully treating and managing many illnesses.

  6. good morning urban hounds!

oh your mom and dad take such good care of you!
yes, just like us people it is so good to get regular check up to manage small changes that occur so they never become or feel big!

it is an excellent practice that every 2 and 4 footed creature should do!

i am so glad you all are doing so well!

small checks and fine tuning = no big surprsies that may feel scary!

  7. I'm so glad that everyone is ok and I really hope that you all get better soon, especially Bobs poor eye!! Bless them all! I coudnt agree more, My Mum is a bit over-protective of me but the Vet says that it is a good thing becuse she always catches things early which is good for me and her as treament can be very expensive if an illness is left to get worse! Mum always make sure I have regular Vet check-ups even though I'm only three and she has good pet insurance for me too!

  9. That is the only problem with dogs with big eyes, trying to keep them safe. I hold my breath every time our dogs go under bushes incase they get a scratch. Glad nobody had to have anything major done to them at the vet.

  12. Holy Cow what a week. Hope the eyes get better quickly. Mom is of the same mind, catch things early and it is easier to deal with. Bailey had his senior bloodwork done last month and it was normal.

  21. Wow, that's a lot of health issues. Thank goodness you caught the cornea scratch early. We waited maybe two days and Audi's got worse, which is why he now has an eye graft and a constantly oozy eye. We hope your pups are feeling better soon!

  22. We are so over eye ulcers! Tallulah is going to start wearing Doggles! Ridiculous for her!
So we feel Bob and Tubby's pain. And your pocket book pain!
Have you ever heard of using milk thistle to help cleanse the liver? Our vet recommended that for Quincy, but we didn't get to try it. And we found this dosage information if you are interested. http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-angels.com/liver_diet.htm

Hope everyone starts feeling better soon!
