Mom can be very scatterbrained. Last week she ordered a bunch of beets from Fresh Direct with plans of making a healthy beet soup for her and dad, but she plum forgot to order the other ingredients for the soup. Which means she was left with 2 lbs of beets and nothing to do with them. In such cases the only solution is to make dog treats.
Beet puree has traditionally been used as a cheap filler in low quality dog food, but that does not mean that beets don't have health benefits. They have a high amount of fiber as well as folic-acid, calcium, and iron. Studies have found that beets are helpful in preventing cancer and heart disease. In addition to all of these benefits they are very low in calories making them an excellent choice for portly pups.
Oven Roasted Beets (this is so simple its not even really a recipe).
Ingredients:
Beets (that is it one ingredient, can't get simpler then that).
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350. Scrub beets and slice them as thinly as possible. Spread beat slices in a single layer on parchment lined baking sheets. Roast in the oven for about an hour until they beets are dried out and curled at the edges, it may take less time in your oven so check frequently.
Store in the refrigerator for about 3 weeks or freeze.

My doggies love most veggies that are good for dogs..havent tryed beets yet, but will!
ReplyDeleteMy hubby loves them but I don't...of course he buys them at the Farmer's Market, cooks them and then they sit in the fridge...now I know that they are good for doggies he could share with them!

P.S.: It took Lulu, my bunny sister, over a year to get used to me and my feline siblings. Now, she is comfortable with all three of us. Rosie still eyes her so they can only be near her under strict supervision.

we roast them just like you said and cut them up to put in quinoa muffins and treats for the pug and the bird!
