Elvis's Birthday Snacks

Bob practicing his Elvis sneer

Yesterday, January 8, was Elvis's bitrthday.  We aren't the biggest Elvis fans here to be honest.   Though he is famous for that schmaltzy dog song Old Shep,

but we do think the King had great tastes in sandwiches.  Elvis apparently ate several Peanut butter, Bacon, and banana sandwiches daily, and what self respecting dog, hound or otherwise, doesn't drool at the mention of Peanut Butter, Bacon and Bananas.   So mom made us some special Elvis inspired treats (though she left out the bacon, silly Mom said it was too fatty for us but we have seen her eat truckloads of the stuff over the years!)  Here's the recipe for the snack mom made.

Peanut Butter and Banana Sandwiches for Hounds

  •  1 large banana
  • Peanut butter, several table spoons
  • Wheat germ (optional)
  • Honey
Slice the banana into ten pieces.  Spoon a dollop of peanut butter on half of the bananas and then sprinkle them with some wheat germ (I included this just because its healthy)  and drizzle on some honey.  Top the with the remaining banana slices and serve!

Hounds awaiting their Elvis snacks (Ping is sporting her poodle skirt for the occasion).

Norbert takes a taste.

Tubby takes a taste.

Mom also made some Elvis sandwiches for her and dad (sans the bacon), since dad loves them and mom thinks they are pretty tasty too.

Elvis Sandwich (serves two, or one if you are Elvis in which case you must also add bacon)

  • 4 slices of white bread
  • Creamy peanut butter, like Jiff or Skippy
  • 1 large banana mashed
  • Honey
  • 2 tbsp butter
Spread the bread lightly with peanut butter.   Spoon mashed banana on two of the bread slices and drizzle over some honey.   Close the sandwiches and press to adhere.   Melt the  butter in a large skillet over medium high heat.  Fry the sandwiches until golden brown, about 2 minutes per side.

  8. Jen says that even though she is southern born and raised, she has never eat one of those Elvis specials. In fact, she's never had a grilled peanut butter and banana sandwich. But she does love pb and banana on some whole wheat bread. Mmmmmm......

  9. Coincidentally, we learned last night that Isabelle doesn't care for bananas. Can you imagine? Tallulah and Petunia will eat just about anything.

  12. I am a believer of giving animals good names. Fido just doesn't cut it. I LOVE your choice of names. I am also very pleased to see the wheatgerm included in the peanut butter/banana recipe. That simple addition turns it into health food. :)
