Turkey Heart Beet Cakes

My Little Dog,
A Heartbeat at my Feet
        Edith Wharton

Dear Dr. Zira

Tubby and Dr. Z last summer

she loved her nosh.   Unlike most dogs she wasn't too crazy about walks, pets, or toys, but food oh my, yes.  Z would bat us with her paw and make a sort of purring noise while we ate to get some of our food.  The day before she passed she pulled this routine on our vet and managed to get a portion of her turkey sandwich.  In her memory made these little meat loafs this weekend, her brothers and sister where happy to eat her portion in tribute.

Heart Beet Cakes

  • 1 1lb ground turkey
  • 1 cups cooked Quinona, thanks Kolchak for giving me the idea to use Quinona in this awesome post
  • 1/2 purple cabbage, diced very fine in the food processor
  • 1 cup oven roasted beets, diced
  • 2 beaten eggs
Preheat the oven to 350.   Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl.  Spoon into pans, I used a little heart pan, but a loaf pan or muffin tin would work too and bake for 45 minutes to an hour.

These tasty cakes are grain free thanks to the wonder of Quinona, a seed similar to leafy green veggies that can stand in for grains.   Combine with the other healthy ingredients this makes a tasty and heart healthy kibble topper.

  1. Thanks for another wonderful grian-free recipe. Jen's not much of a cook (she set off the smoke detector yesterday using the TOASTER), but you were a great inspiration behind her making our cookies last time.

I hope you continue to find comfort as you fondly remember Dr. Z. Thanks to you her end of life was shared with humans who loved and cared for her.

  2. What a wonderful post and tribute to Dr. Zira! I had to laugh at the turkey sandwich story. BOL! What a terrific recipe too!
