Fitness update: Somehow I got totally confused about the fitness challenges in the Kolchak puggle K9 camp, woops. Maybe it was deliberate misunderstanding on my fitness challenged part, but I didn't realize I was supposed to check every thursday, duh! Anyway I have decided that even if I finish late I will complete the challenges. I'm trying the hill running now with Norbert, Ping, Bob, and Tubby. Norbert has mild arthritis that flared up after his emergency surgery for bloat and torsion at the end of July. He still recovered remarkably and his Doctor's were all impressed, though they did use the disclaimer incredible shape for a dog of his age. Ugh! Norbert tries to embody the "your only as old as you feel". He may be nine, and a large breed at that, but he only feels 4 or 5. Anyway Norbert, Ping, Bob, and Tubby will be running these stairs at our local park, Lincoln Park.
I didn't get a picture of the stairs, promise to add it later, but here is a picture of the statue at the top of them from google images.
We will be doing the hill/stairs at the beginning and end of our walks this week. I am modifying this a bit so Tubby participate, his vet says not too much pounding exercise like jogging since his arthritis is a bit worse then Norberts, so we will only be running up and down 2 or 3 times rather then 20 minutes, or walking for the full 20 minutes at a fast clip. Even that should get heart rates up. (Tubby doesn't want me to make him sound like an invalid and thinks everyone should know that he keeps up very well on walks, and he was in the lead on his recent walk at the Lord Stirling Stable. Dr. Zira, on the other hand wants everyone to know that she will be at home napping. No silly hill runs for her, at almost 13 and with bad hips she says her morning constitutional around the block is plenty.
Oh and I should add on the day the picture of Ping and her Dad was taken we went to Manhattan to visit a friend of mine. We visited the dog park and then walked around the city for about 2 hours, Ping had a great time, and got a lot of exercise.
Update: Pictures from our quick hill walk/runs, (I had not loaded picture s on the computer before.) Tubby did a great job and we made it the whole 20 minutes alternating quck walks with runs.

Hurray for you!!! You're all doing brilliantly!!
ReplyDeleteI get a bit over excited if the LOTH or the MOTH break into a bit of a run on our walks - so they tend to stick to walking fast which gets us both slightly out of breath (greyhounds may be speedy but we're not blessed with much stamina). I usually find a good smell I have to sniff which is always a good way of slowing things down.
Love and licks, Winnie
Sounds like you have a great plan for the challenge.
ReplyDeleteWell done to you all. I suppose me and the kitties do a kind of modified indoor take on this, we play hide and seek in the house which involves me chasing them up and down the stairs and across the hallways until we're all puffed out =^..^=
ReplyDeleteit sure looks like a hot day over there
